When the Concrete Slabs Should be Removed?

A concrete slab is a structural element that is used to create many flat surfaces such as ceilings, floors, and roof decks, to name a few. While it is typically durable and supported by beams, columns, walls, or the ground, there might still come a time when they will need to be replaced.

Read on to find out which conditions call for concrete slab removal and replacement.

Deep Cracks

Cracks in the concrete slabs can be caused by numerous reasons. Weight of large trucks, improper subgrade or erosion of subgrade can cause deep, widespread cracks in the concrete where settlement has occurred.

When the concrete is freshly mixed with water, the water evaporates from the surface before hardening the concrete. If the rate of evaporation is higher than that of the water rising to the concrete surface, it can lead to plastic shrinkage and cracking. Those cracks are not only on the surface but also throughout the entire slab.

When you see such cracks appear in your concrete, it might mean it’s time to call an expert to assess the area.

Sinking

Another potential occurrence that can require you to remove the concrete slab is when concrete starts sinking. This can happen due to multiple reasons:

The subgrade was not prepared properly, and loose dirt may have been used for the subgrade. And when the dirt settled, water from rain or sprinklers went under the concrete and caused it to lose support and become more susceptible to sinking.

The subgrade was compacted, and the concrete was subjected to a heavyweight which caused the concrete slab to sink. In addition to that, different types of soils have different load-bearing capabilities.

The settling, shrinkage, and compaction of soil can all cause concrete to sink. For instance, if the soil under the slab isn’t compact, the concrete can start to sink as the soil hardens.

Frost Heave

Frost heave is a common occurrence in colder climates, and it affects concrete. Depending on the location, the ground can freeze to an extensive depth. The water freezes and causes the soil surface to heave, which, in turn, damages pavements and other building structures made of concrete. When that happens, replacing the concrete is called for.

Other Reasons

There are also some other potential circumstances that can require concrete slab removal:

The concrete construction is faulty, and the owner wants it replaced.

The entire structure needs removing, and the concrete is part of it.

There is an addition to a commercial or residential building that requires concrete removal because it obstructs the addition.
